British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several access tunnels leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - imposed militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," he added. "They were part of thousands of British personnel deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
