The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a test for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like standard physical horror, but within Together exists a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a particular energy to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The story commences when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
