Trumpism's most telling and characteristic occasions – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of several weeks, the nation's leader started showing all observers his designs for an ornate dance hall twice the size compared to the White House and then began solo dismantling the East Wing portion to construct it.
He has committed acts countless times more severe – the current estimate of casualties due to his slashing to USAID stands at 600,000 and growing, and presently an analysis forecast his petroleum strategies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have risked – really, no former commander would have conceived – unilaterally destroying major areas of the presidential residence to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom have business with the government.
We moved from 'the gentle will obtain the Earth' into 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'
As disorienting as it is to watch the president seek to颠覆 the old idea of democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion within America who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That is those of us – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we were raised with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of compassion into an icon of hate who endorses precisely the cruelties that he denounced in scripture; this transformation occurred more gradually, over decades rather than months, yet it remains unsettling via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground
So let me first describe the Jesus that I grew up with, because theoretically Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and because the rapidly expanding group within America might have little sense of him because they identify as atheists or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; but I do think that there are pearls of significant worth in the Christian story.
It is emphatically not the narrative of an authoritative monarch emerging; rather, a baby is born to parents without shelter in a garage, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to evade undercover officers. The baby grows up in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his teaching is about love for others, specifically for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and protecting. Jesus' answer to aggression is to offer the additional cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a means to teach the assailant; his method regarding offenses states that when an individual takes your coat you should give the person your additional clothing as well.
The obvious and direct truth that the Jesus from scripture advocates for a kind of profound affection concentrated on the impoverished has perpetually caused Christianity somewhat of a controversial faith: attractive to the populace, but because of its intrinsic extremism requiring to be controlled. During the 1950s it was contained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it basically blessed current circumstances.
A Conflict for the Finest of Us
So I have been encouraged to observe the persistent defiance against Trump emerge during the previous year. It has served as great solace to participate in developing the initiative that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged electorate to participate in significant amounts during minor elections. We will need to continue it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags during all protests and requests to the finest aspects in US history.
We're going to be asked ... how did you receive the foreigner? Did you welcome them and receive them or refuse?
America is best defended, to put it differently, through connection to the finest in US heritage, just as Christianity is optimally secured through connection to elements that cause it to be special and beautiful, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In both situations does it mean acting as if the most damaging of both America and religious tradition was nonexistent; it represents both humility and belief, a blend that genuine US believers should be comfortable with.
