An underground market for unlicensed weight-loss medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, based on recent findings.
Experimental Treatment Acquiring Traction Online
The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its supposed weight-reducing effects. Viewers are encouraged to message these profiles directly for supplier links, while also obtaining promotional offers.
Active Trade on Social Networks
Additionally, a flourishing trade exists on messaging services, where communities with numerous of members share “before and after” photos, administration instructions and assertions of next-day UK delivery. Sellers market the drug there before directing buyers to other platforms for purchases.
Understanding Retatrutide
Retatrutide is an experimental injectable created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could help individuals reduce up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed digitally as the successor to Ozempic.
Healthcare Experts Express Concerns
However, doctors and pharmacists have cautions that the distribution of what remains an unapproved medication in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in users administering substances of unknown origin.
Several experts said the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the increasing cost of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Status and Implementation
Selling the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be marketed or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Several influencers attempt to circumvent the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but promotion and distribution can still breach medicines, marketing, and consumer laws, potentially leading to fines, legal action or imprisonment.
Service Reaction and Content Elimination
Based on the social media company, the service has removed violative material and prohibited related hashtags and search suggestions. The organization stated it was committed to keeping the platform safe and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.
Online Trading Activities
Investigations also discovered groups with up to 9,000 participants marketing retatrutide using the platform's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with thousands of members, filled with images of slimming results, positive testimonials and step-by-step guides for preparing or injecting at home.
Within moments of joining one group, a seller posted contact information, where the majority of purchases occur. The seller sent an instruction manual and promised delivery within two days. When asked whether the product was authentic, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a alleged testing documentation. Not one asked about weight, health issues or past usage.
Product Information and Costs
Within these groups, messages display black plastic packages with postal service stickers, claiming to contain new batches. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, mixed at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use pens typically priced at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a pen should last, vendors give conflicting responses varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Platform Moderation and Security Measures
A spokesperson for the messaging service stated it regularly monitored dangerous content on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Cautions
“People are administering substances they can’t verify. Even if the research behind retatrutide is valid, these online products may not include what they advertise,” stated a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor connected the surge in demand to current price rises for approved weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, patients are using social media. But fake treatments are highly risky. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the environment they were made in was clean,” she said.
Her staff has already seen individuals harmed by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We understand the disappointment, but purchasing from Telegram or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be impure or improperly measured.”
Manufacturer Statement
A representative from Eli Lilly stated the substance was in third stage clinical trials and had not been evaluated or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, adding that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly experimental product not yet authorized … may expose patients to possibly serious health risks”.
